Caracola

They have brought me a seashell.

Inside it sings
a map of the ocean.
My heart
fills with water,
with little fish
made of shadow and silver.

They have brought me a seashell.

My first attempt at translation! I feel victorious.

And the beautiful original, by my great hero Federico Garcia Lorca:

Me han traido una caracola.

Dentro le canta
un mar de mapa.
Mi corazon
se llena de agua,
con pececillos
de sombra y de plata.

Me han traido una caracola.

My interpretation of this small poem is that he is overjoyed at being given such a simple present. It reminds me of the time I felt a similar emotion, when a student of mine brought me, on a blustery Fall day, a single, perfect persimmon wrapped in a delicate bit of tissue. It made me absurdly happy and I wrote this in honor of that emotion. Plagiarism can be such a delight.

They have brought me a persimmon.

Inside it sings
the sky
of autumn leaves.
My heart fills
with small buds,
with blossoms
made of light and gold.

They have brought me a persimmon.
